Santa Maria Valley Humane Society
The Santa Maria Valley Humane Society was founded in 1981 as a privately funded 501c3 entity. It has been in operation at its current location on Black Road in Santa Maria since 1990, and in that time it has served the community by accepting and adopting out thousands of dogs and cats. In 1998, the Society built and opened a clinic facility in order to offer affordable spay and neutering services performed by local veterinarians. The Humane Society is a "no kill" animal facility and is committed to helping the community find safe, loving homes for unwanted pets and to reducing the population of unwanted animals through its spay and neuter education program. A large volunteer team works in conjunction with paid staff to care for the animals, educate the community, and raise funding and awareness for this important community service.

Adoption Process
Potential adopters are required to fill out an adoption application. Our adoption counselors will review your application and discuss your needs to ensure the pet you have selected is the best fit for your household. Your landlord will be contacted for permission (if applicable) and your veterinarian will be contacted to ensure that current and past pets have received proper care. We ask that all members of the household come in to meet the animal. If you are adopting a dog and currently have one at home, we ask that you bring your current dog to our facility to meet the dog you wish to adopt. Provided everyone gets along and all other adoption criteria are met, adoptions can take place the same day.

Please note: After submitting an adoption application, we recommend that you follow-up with the shelter to ensure they have received your adoption application from Petango. The shelter’s contact information can be found in the left hand column. Thank you.
