City of San Angelo - Animal Shelter

The Animal Services Division operates the San Angelo Animal Shelter, investigates animal bites and allegations of animal cruelty, picks up strays and dead animals, and accepts owned animals.

Animal Control Officers responds to after-hours emergency calls. Emergency calls include bites and actively aggressive animals but does not include strays or dead animals. All non-emergency calls will be handled based on priority during the regular work week.

San Angelo’s leash law requires dogs to be on a leash or on the owner’s property. Dogs that are not leashed and out of their own yards are subject to impoundment.  San Angelo also has spay/ neuter and microchip laws.  All cats and dogs in the city limits are required to be altered, microchipped, and current on rabies vaccine.

Stray animals are retained for three working days to allow possible owners time to reclaim their pets.  If reclaiming your pet, you must show proof of spay/ neuter surgery, microchip, current rabies vaccination, and possible proper licensing paperwork.  Stray animals, not current on the aforementioned requirements, will only be released from the shelter once the animal is compliant with the law, and the owner pays all redemption fees.

Adoption Process

After three days, animals picked up or dropped off as strays will be made available for adoption. All animals adopted from the shelter must be compliant with city law.  This includes being spayed/ neutered, vaccinated for rabies, and microchip.  Potential adopters must complete an application, show identification, and pay the adoption fee.  If adopters reside in a rental property, the shelter must contact the landlord prior to finalizing the adoption, to ensure the animal is allowed to reside at the property.

The Animal Shelter utilizes www.Petango.com to highlight all animals at the shelter. Animals that are dropped off at the shelter or picked up by Animal Control Officers are uploaded to this website to allow families to look for their lost pets as well as potential adopters to see what animals are at the shelter. There are many wonderful shelter pets in need of forever homes.  Please opt to adopt.
