Monadnock Humane Society

The Monadnock Humane Society is a private, non profit humane organization dedicated to improving the quality of life for animals and people through humane education, and to providing shelter and facilitating adoption for lost, abused or abandoned animals. The MHS Adoption and Learning Center, built in 2000, is a 23,000 square foot facility located in a secluded setting that redefines the concept of "animal shelter". From the comfortable "Almost Home Rooms" for dogs and spacious, naturally lit feline "catillions" - to the state-of-the-art training center and boarding facility, MHS truly does provide a caring and safe haven for thousands of animals waiting to find their forever home. MHS also offers a welcoming atmosphere for visitors and the community. Just one mile south of Keene on Route 10, the Adoption & Learning Center totals 90 acres providing plenty of space for the Center itself, ample parking, and lots of outdoor space for training classes, agility, walking trails,

Adoption Process

We have an open adoption policy which means we try to place animals into their forever home with limited paper work. We engage the potential adopters in conversation and inform them with as much knowledge about the animal as we know. * Adopters must be at least 18 years of age. * A completed adoption application is required for all adoptions. * All currently owned pets are up-to-date on rabies vaccines and licensed, if applicable, prior to adoption. * Landlord approval, if renting, is required. * A $25 deposit is required to put an animal on hold. Holds are valid until the end of the next business day and are not accepted over the phone or online. The hold deposit is non-refundable and cannot be transferred to another animal. All family members must meet with the pet prior to adoption. * Some adult dogs are required to attend and graduate from an MHS training class within three months of adoption. There is an additional fee for the course.

Please note: After submitting an adoption application, we recommend that you follow-up with the shelter to ensure they have received your adoption application from Petango. The shelter’s contact information can be found in the left hand column. Thank you.
