Fairfax County Animal Shelter
The Fairfax County Animal Shelter is Fairfax County's only open access, municipal shelter. In 2013, our placement rate was 92%, which makes Fairfax County the largest jurisdiction in the country with a rate over 90%.
1.Look at adoptable animals online and then visit the Shelter to meet your prospective pet. Make sure to bring a lease or notarized letter if you rent or are not the homeowner clearly stating you can have the particular animal and current vet records for any pets currently living with you. If you own, we can confirm homeownership through online property records.
2.Walk through to meet available pets and then visit with pets you are considering adopting. A volunteer or caretaker will facilitate the visit and tell you more about the pet you’re visiting.
3.Complete an adoption questionnaire.
4.Meet with an adoption counselor to ask questions and learn more about the pet you want to adopt.
5.Complete your adoption! Many pets can go home the day they are adopted, but some must be picked up one or two days later after their spay/neuter appointment.
