Low maintenance, healthy, mellow, easy going fawn gentleman looking for his retirement home.
Spencer is a 5 year old fawn Great Dane who bears a striking resemblance to Marmaduke with his big ol' blocky head. He's had to turn down more than one autograph request in his day, he doesn't mind though it still means attention for him. :)
He currently lives on a farm with lots of barnyard animals, 4 fellow dog friends, and 1 cat and has adapted just fine. He's not picky, he likes living with fellow canine friends but would be fine being the only dog in the house too. He also lives with 3 kids, ages 11, 9, 8 and has done great with them. He'd probably do best with kids those ages or older just because he is a big boy and doesn't realize just how big he is.
Spencer has free roam when his foster parents are at work and hasn't thrown any wild parties, eaten anything off the counters, had girls over, or made any messes. He's a very laid back kind of guy. All he wants is his food, a nice comfy dog bed and/or couch depending on his mood and time of day (8:30pm or later=dog bed, 2:00pm=couch), and lots of love.
He can be a little timid with strange men at first (but hey, who isn't?!?) but warms up quickly. He enjoys a good quick run or walk every day. If you're walking him, a gentle leader or prong collar works best as sometimes little dogs distract him and he's pretty strong so you won't be winning any leash tug o' wars with him if he's distracted and tugging and on a regular leash.
On the farm where he is now, he enjoys daily runs through the pasture and a daily dip in the pond as he thinks the mud and dead fish smell does wonders for his coat. :) He's such an easy guy that he's fit in seamlessly to his foster home and I'm sure would do the same in his forever home as well.

It's been awhile since my last update but that's because I'm such a gentleman who's fit so well into my foster home that they forgot that I'm a foster and am still looking for a forever home. I'm no young pup as you can tell by my graying face but I think it makes me look distinguished, don't you? (Hey, it works for George Clooney!)
I like long naps on the couch, snoozes on my dog bed, the occasional run (yes, even at my age I can run like the wind!), car rides (I just wish they'd let me drive once in awhile, oh well sitting shotgun is the next best thing), getting my ears scratched by my humans and giving kisses in return. My foster family leaves me home during the day with free reign to hold down the fort while they're at work and school and they never have to worry about me making a mess or destroying anything, I'm much too mature for such tomfoolery.
I'm healthy as a horse (and am occasionally mistaken for one too) and weigh in at about 120 pounds, perfect Dane weight if I do say so myself. I love kids and when I went to the Iowa Pet Expo with another foster mom, I was the star of the show and especially loved all the attention the kids were paying to me. My kids that I live with now are 12, 10, and 8 and I like 'em that way, past the age of wanting to poke, prod, and pull on me all the time. Younger than 5 are tolerable but make me a little nervous because I just never know if they're gonna pull on my tail or ears or worse yet, mess with my feet. I have a bit of a foot fetish in that I am really not a fan of having my nails trimmed and get really nervous when my foster mom and dad say the word "feet" to me. But they've outsmarted me and figured out that if I'm totally relaxed or taking a nap I don't even notice when they trim then.
In addition to the kids I live with and love, I live with 4 other canine brothers and sister of various sizes and ages and do great with them. Don't tell them but I could take them or leave them. So if you're a home without any other dogs I wouldn't miss them but if there are other dogs I'll be fine too. See how easygoing I am?!? I'm a quiet guy who doesn't need to be velcroed to your side all the time, I just like to know you're there but am content to watch you from the comfort of the couch or my dog bed on the floor and if you throw give me a little lovin' (and a few tablescraps or treats never hurt either) now and then it's all good. Low maintenance is my middle name.
I walk well on a leash and have been in a couple parades (I've never been called Marmaduke so much in my life!) but my foster mom says a gentle leader is best because if I come across runts (small dogs) I tend to get a little excited and since I'm no Yorkie you might throw your arm out of socket trying to hold me back if I'm on a regular leash. As for my daily routine, I stay in this phenomenal shape by getting in a run or two every day. Right now I live on a farm so they let me run in the pasture once in awhile but mostly in the fenced in backyard. A fenced in yard (or pasture) is a must because if you just let me out and trust me to stay in the yard I'll run. I'm just being honest here. I'll come back in my own time and if you yell loud enough that I can hear you, I'll come back when you call but these legs were made for running. How else am I gonna keep my boyish figure? So I either need a fairly large fenced in yard or someone who is gonna take me running/walking with them regularly.
This is beginning to sound like one of those match.com ads so I think I'll wrap it up before it gets any more awkward. I know some might be hesistant to give me a chance because of my age. But don't let my age scare you off, I've still got a lot of living left to do and I don't mean to brag but I'm like a fine wine that just keeps getting better with time. Call me (or email my adoption coordinator). To meet me is to love me.
